Move, Groove and Grow! a3 in Partnership with Anglicare Victoria

a3 instructor Rebecca Sabatino gives us some insight into this great music and movement program for children in Out-of-Home care.

a3 has been working in partnership with Anglicare Victoria to deliver a range of programs including Move, Groove and Grow. Following their last session and end-of-year performance, Rebecca answered some questions about the program which has been running since 2013.

Who participates in the Move, Groove and Grow program?
Move, Groove and Grow is a performing arts program for children living in Out-of-Home Care in Anglicare’s Eastern Region. This year we have children aged between the ages of 7 - 14 that come for an hour and a half every week.

What does an average session look like – what kind of activities are involved?
Move, Groove and Grow always starts with some yummy snacks and the opportunity to check in about the day. The class is filled with various music, dance and drama activities that aim to encourage team work and foster new friendships. We also do mindfulness activities such as colouring, reading and breathing to assist the children to be in the here and now.

What kind of benefits can you see are conveyed to the children who participate in the program?
The participants have the opportunity to spend time socialising with other children that have similar living situations to them which gives them a sense of belonging. The class is structured in a way that helps to develop self regulation of behaviours and emotions, trust in others, problem solving skills and teamwork. The Performing Arts are effective in helping the children to develop self esteem and self confidence as well as mental and physical health and wellbeing.
